Dr. Ádám Makkai participated in the 1956 Hungarian Revolution as a college student. After the Soviet army crushed the Revolution, he emigrated to the United States, where he received a B.A. from Harvard, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Yale. Then, as a professor of English and Linguistics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He published numerous books on linguistics and a number of volumes of his Hungarian poems and translations. He edited a 1030 pp. anthology of seven centuries of Hungarian poetry, 579 poems rendered into English by 102 translators, titled: In Quest of the 'Miracle Stag', Atlantis-Centaur, Chicago, 1996.
